Overview: The Ministry of Culture and Tourism supports all tourism efforts for the country of Turkey via marketing, public relations, events, research and special programs. The New York office reports directly to The Ministry of Culture and Tourism in Ankara, and works in cooperation with the Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C. offices to promote travel to Turkey from North America.
While modern Turkey is a relatively new republic – the country was founded in 1923 – it is an ancient land, a cradle of civilizations and a center of world history. Turkey is the site of the first human settlement; the seat of the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman Empires; the birthplace of Homer, the last home of the Virgin Mary; the land of Seven Churches of Revelation and the place where Saint Paul, Saint John and Saint Nicholas lived and preached. These are just a small sampling of Turkey’s extraordinary heritage.
Turkey’s topography is almost as diverse as its storied history. Turkey is home to 71.5 million people and more than twice the size of California. With its spectacular coastline, majestic mountains, cosmopolitan cities and quaint villages, it is one of the world’s most desirable travel destinations. Turkey is a country of fascinating contrasts, where antiquity is juxtaposed with the contemporary and the familiar with the exotic; where sun-swept beaches beckon less than an hour away from snow-capped mountains and everywhere visitors are treated to the extraordinary warmth of the Turkish people. Turkey is also an affordable European destination for Americans and easy to get to – Turkish Airlines provides non-stop daily flights from New York and Chicago to Istanbul. Other major international carriers have access to those gateways as well.
Istanbul in 2010 will be celebrated as a European Capital of Culture with year-long special events, renovations of major landmarks, the opening of new museums and exhibitions, and performances by artists from around the world. What better reason to put Istanbul at the top of the list of places to visit in 2010!
